Interview with Cathryn Grant; author of ‘Demise of the Soccer Moms’

Indie  Author interview Cathryn Grant: Demise of the Soccer Moms Website: Suburban Noir http://suburbannoir.com/ Q. Cathryn, you are the first person I have ‘known’ who has taken the publishing bull by the horns and gone Indie. Others have followed, and the quality says a lot about how difficult it is to crack the traditional route. What set you off in that direction? Had you tried other routes? How did you choose the publishing platform, and what did they offer that others didn’t? What surprised you most about the process? Cathryn:   About ten years ago I started submitting short stories for … Continue reading Interview with Cathryn Grant; author of ‘Demise of the Soccer Moms’

‘No Arrests in 2039’

Good old Every Day Fiction, they’re taking a chance with another of my tales. ‘No Arrests in 2039’, in which a local council gets inventive about its crime stats, will be unleashed on August 9th. Disclaimer: Dear Elected Representatives – No, this is not a way forward, you hear me? Update: EDF is offline at the moment while they move house to new servers. EDF reports progress, and will be back on August 15th. Affected stories will transfer to September. 09/08/11 Continue reading ‘No Arrests in 2039’

Psychoanalyzing fictional characters (via Linda Cassidy Lewis)

I have to say more about this, and so I will shortly. Linda is right, the psychologist’s hat is as difficult to remove as the headgear of the internal editor. More so, possibly, as most of us start out as uninformed nosey parkers and graduate (literally and severally) to become professional ones. When fictional characters are properly filled out, we are satisfied by them because, flaws and all, they are authentic. The trick is to allow them to be idiosyncratic, unpredictable, and downright annoying within that consistent authenticity. That’s what Linda has done with her characters, and why it became … Continue reading Psychoanalyzing fictional characters (via Linda Cassidy Lewis)

Recycled #4: Prunella – Queen of the Dessert

Prune-Ella, Queen of the Dessert Cynicism. A withering of the heart through repeated, constant, undeserved criticism of genuine and meritorious effort? Well not desolation or abuse that’s for sure; those give rise to defeat, hatred, uncomplicated self-destruction by the slow degrees of personal deconstruction. No, cynicism has a sense of survival to it, vengeance even. It is veiled power, happy to bide its time, content to stalk its target until the moment and the words are most apposite. Cynicism is miserable nastiness out in a posh frock and allowed to mix with its targets. Ah but bitching, that’s a much … Continue reading Recycled #4: Prunella – Queen of the Dessert

Recycled#2: Gross Expectations

Gross Expectations Eloise hoisted open the flimsy door and paused on the threshold, screwing up her nose and holding onto the urge to vomit. Somebody already had, it seemed, and she surveyed the cramped and stinking landscape with a tactical eye. How to accomplish the necessary without acquiring more sewage than she was hoping to leave behind? Not for the first time, Eloise wished Glastonbury had a Business Class section. ©suzanne conboy-hill 2009 Continue reading Recycled#2: Gross Expectations

Mismatch

Recycled from 2009, here’s one of my very first flash pieces, written as part of my university fiction writing course. Mismatch Andy wriggled in his seat, stretching his legs, or trying to, in the cramped space that was Dress Circle. In his head he tried out phrases such as ‘Well, who’d have thought a Carstairs play would turn out to be this tedious!’ and ‘I’m happy to cut and run if you are!’ but one glance at Alison, leaning forward as far as possible and with eyes like saucers, told him that this was already a non-starter. He grappled for … Continue reading Mismatch

Rationalising and Re-cycling

For reasons that had to do with ignorance, and the idea that there might a cap to the number of posts I am allowed, (or at least might be likely to approach in the next hundred years), I put my fiction on its own page, and then announced each new entry in a post. How dumb is that? Same number of posts but no room for contiguous comment – sheesh! So, as of now, my bits and pieces of writing, including the infamous ‘poitry’ if that ever emerges again, will be posted on their own page where they can accrue … Continue reading Rationalising and Re-cycling

Cathryn Grant’s ‘Demise of the Soccer Moms’

In music, I have eclectic tastes. Just check out my iPod where Nine Inch Nails share space with Shania Twain, Black Rebel Motor Cycle Club, Vampire Weekend, and a bunch of one-offs like Mungo Jerry (In the Summertime), Eric Clapton (Autumn Leaves), and Smoke Fairies (Strange Moon Rising). So why am I so picky about my reading? A die-hard SF consumer (no black hole too deep), I sweep on by past anything that smacks of the suburban, contemporary, or frankly, wimminy. Well, I just learned my lesson, and via an indie author, at that. Cathryn Grant’s Demise of the Soccer Moms … Continue reading Cathryn Grant’s ‘Demise of the Soccer Moms’

‘Moonrise’

Apparently it’s Blue Monday today – lousy weather, new year resolutions unresolved, and xmas chocolates out of the box and onto the bum. Not here though. Just had ‘Moonrise‘ delivered to my inbox, oh yes!   Bit of a hoot, this one; rather different from ‘Promotion’ but not unlike ‘Rory’s Tie’. Looking at these, I worry about what a psychologist might make of me. Oh, I am a psychologist.. Continue reading ‘Moonrise’

Countdown to a flash

Well, at just over 300 words, it’s more of a flicker really. Every Day Fiction has seen fit to publish ‘Moonrise’ and will unleash it on the public on January 17th so better brace yourselves for a bit of pestering! The friend whose (mis)adventure triggered the FICTIONAL tale, approved it for publication but quite possibly did so on the assumption that there was as much chance of this as there was of the Lib Dems and the Conservatives forming a coalition government. Oh dear. Did I mention that it’s FICTIONAL? In a publication with FICTION in the title? That’s alright … Continue reading Countdown to a flash
